Title: Sail with a Smile
Prompt: The Fifth Blight
Player Character: Lavender Hawke
Universe: Precipice
Characters: Carver Hawke, Bethany Hawke, Leandra Hawke, Aveline Vallen
Summary: Lavender smiles differently than she used to. (Sketch, 350 words)
After they are granted passage to Kirkwall, Lavender begins to smile again, but differently than before. Bethany watches her talk in low voices with Aveline, seemingly unaffected by the stench of steerage and the groaning, rhythmic pitch of the ship.
On the fourth day, the miller's husband turns and one of the mercenaries puts him down. The widower screams and flails, and Carver and another man hold him back as the body the body is wrapped in moldering rags, carried to the top deck, and dumped overboard. Leandra says a prayer aloud, her hand clamped in Bethany's, anchoring her to mortality. Lavender only smiles.
On the seventh day, the miller's skin grows mottled and dark, his eyes a milky white, and he too is put down. There is no one left to flail and cry when his body is thrown overboard. There is a twitch in Lavender's cheek, but she never stops smiling.
On the tenth day, Carver has an argument with two of the mercenaries. They say he's irrational. They wonder if he has the blight, too.
"I'll burn this ship to ash," Lavender says, deceptively wry and careless. Her mother would later insist to the rest it was a joke.
She says this softly, but they are all packed in together, shoulder to shoulder. Everyone hears. By nightfall, for the first time, the Hawke family has room to sleep on the floor. The rest of the passengers have given them what little space they can. Carver is angry, but will not voice the complaint etched across his face--that he can take care of himself, that Lavender is a fool to out herself as a mage while they're trapped, surrounded by desperate people.
Bethany rests on her side, back to back with Carver, soothed by the cadence of his breathing and his warmth. She never truly sleeps. When she opens her eyes in the middle of the night, she sees Lavender's eyes are open too. Her elder sister is watching the mercenaries from where she sleeps back-to-back with Aveline. Her eyes are sharp, glittering in the dark. The smile has not left her face.
